NASP continued

A physical education curriculum entitled, Archery: “On Target for Life” co-created by the Department’s of Education and Fish & Wildlife Resources implemented initially in Kentucky elementary, middle and high schools. The program has spread nation-wide, with over 36 states active in the program.

Designed to teach target archery in 4th-12th grades, core content covers archery history, safety, technique, equipment, mental concentration, and self-improvement.

Before presenting the 2-week archery course, teachers undergo an 8-12-hour NASP Basic Archery Instructor (BAI) training program.

Students shoot at bull’s-eye targets placed before an arrow resistant net in their gymnasium. Equipment used is state-of-the-art and designed to fit every student. Thanks to support from the archery industry, the $4,800 equipment “kits” are available to schools for less than $2,700. The unit is developed as a two-week curriculum which meets National Education Standards.

Washington State began their program with training for the school teachers at a “Kickoff” event held in August 2005. Our first Washington NASP Championship was conducted 29 April 2006, at Davis High School in Yakima.

We are continuing to recruit additional schools for the program. Funding help is available.
